Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Psychological Well-being

Addressing the Social and Emotional Needs of Students as Well as the Adults in Their Lives

Overview

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Psychological Well-being Pillar of the National Center for the Elimination of Educational Disparities (NCEED) focuses on the social and emotional needs of students and their families. Through research and interventions, NCEED is holistically addressing the social, emotional, mental health, and academic needs of students, particularly those disproportionately impacted by structural barriers and marginalization.

Goals and Priority Areas

Student Well-being: Develop programming and research initiatives that promote optimal social and emotional well-being for all students by using strengths-based perspectives that emphasize resources, build on potential, and promote empowerment.

Adult Wellness: Provide learning opportunities for parents/caregivers, educators, and other community members to cultivate social and emotional learning skills, recognizing that adult skill development directly impacts student skill development.

Community-Based Participatory Research: Partner with families and communities to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences related to emotional and psychological well-being, with particular attention towards cultural and contextual influences.

Culturally Responsive Approaches: Promote programs and interventions that explicitly focus on culture, context, and identity when addressing SEL and psychological well-being. This focus is essential for promoting the wellness of students, particularly those affected by systemic and historical marginalization.
