Community engagement and collaboration to dismantle barriers to literacy for all students

Overview

The Literacy pillar of the National Center for the Elimination of Education Disparities (NCEED) prioritizes community engagement and collaboration to foster dramatic increases in literacy, especially those from marginalized backgrounds. We believe that literacy is not just critical for children’s academic success and personal growth but also a community asset essential for civic advancement.

Impact

By centering literacy within the community, NCEED aims to create a supportive ecosystem that fosters a culture of reading and learning. When families, educators, and community members work together, students benefit from a holistic approach to literacy development. Improved literacy skills contribute to better academic performance, improved mental health, and a more informed and engaged citizenry.

Goals

  • Community Empowerment: Engage communities to take active roles in promoting literacy, ensuring that families and local organizations are invested in the educational outcomes of their youth.
  • Inclusive Literacy Resources: Ensure every child has access to high-quality literacy resources, including content that reflects their cultural identities and community contexts.
  • Family Engagement: Develop opportunities for families to participate in literacy activities that foster a home environment valuing reading and writing.
  • Collaborative Learning: Partner with local libraries, businesses, and organizations to develop community-led literacy initiatives reflecting the culture and circumstances of each.

Strategies

  • Community Literacy Events: Organize reading festivals, storytelling sessions, and workshops that bring together families, educators, and community members to celebrate literacy and share strategies and resources.
  • Culturally Relevant Programming: Develop literacy programs incorporating local culture, history, and languages, making learning more relevant and engaging for students.
  • Mentorship and Tutoring Programs: Connect students with community mentors and tutors who can provide personalized support and encouragement in their academic and literacy journeys.
  • Resource Sharing: Collaborate with schools, libraries, businesses, organizations, and community centers to create local, easily accessible literacy resources, such as book banks and reading nooks.
