Dr. Afiya Fredericks, Associate Professor at Morgan State University and researcher at the National Center for the Elimination of Educational Disparities (NCEED) was recently selected to participate in the third year of the prestigious Summer Institute on Diversity at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University from June 22, 2025 – June 25, 2025. A member of the inaugural cohort, Dr. Fredericks is the only faculty fellow across all cohorts from an HBCU and the only fellow to date who has successfully gone up for tenure and promotion since their participation.
This summer, Dr. Fredericks returns to the Institute, not only as a fellow but also as a featured panelist, sharing reflections on the tenure and promotion process and offering peer support to fellows navigating the early stages of their academic careers.
The CASBS Summer Institute on Diversity provides a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration, intellectual community, and professional development. Designed to support emerging scholars from backgrounds historically underrepresented in higher education, the Institute cultivates a space for fellows to explore cutting-edge research on how and when difference makes a difference—while also building lasting networks across institutions and disciplines.
Led by Dr. Mary Murphy of Indiana University and Stanford University and Dr. Sylvia Perry of Northwestern University, the Institute is generously supported by the Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, and Spencer Foundation.
