NCEED ended the week of October 13 welcoming students from Wiley H. Bates Middle School of Anne Arundel County to the Morgan State University campus. The students learned about the history of Morgan State, the qualities necessary to be a college student, and toured campus facilities. Their school is named for the late Mr. Wiley H. Bates, a prominent African American businessman and philanthropist. In 1897 Mr. Bates became the third Black man to serve on the Annapolis City Council. He later made a donation to build a Black high school during the Jim Crow era.
